The last decade has seen the advent of a new technology in the entertainment media-Three Dimensional Home Television Technology. 3d technology is cited to be the next big thing as various movies like Pixar’s UP and James Camerons, Avatar have given record breaking hits at the box office.

How does the 3d technology work? Today many manufacturers are working round the clock to bring 3d technology to the living room. There are several methods that these manufacturers use to create 3d images on the 3d Television. Some are very sophisticated and expensive too, while some other methods can be easily afforded. Basically, there are three methods for 3D technology that can be applied by manufacturers.

Ventricular Viewing was first pioneered by Philips and is easily available today. Television sets that make use of ventricular viewing do not require the spectators to wear any funny glasses but they come with a special lens. This lens works by sending different images to each eye. In other words, the image that the left eye sees is entirely different from the image viewed by the right eye. This emulates the two uses of steopsios. This is a process by which, the eyes discern depth. The only drawback here is that the viewer has to sit in a particular spot in front of the TV.

Also here only a couple of people would be able to watch TV, due to a small viewing angle.

Passive Glass systems are being applied by Hyundai to allow both 2 d and 3d viewing. In order to watch both 2d and 3d images, the audience is required to wear spectacles. The Technology is pretty outdated, as the images here are overlapping and the lenses are polarized. This allows an easy viewing of the two overlapping images. This image is very feasible as 40 to 40 inches LCD television sets are being made available in the consumer sector.

Active glass system is very similar to the passive glass system. The glasses here synchronize with the refresh rate of the TV, thus automatically alternating the polarization of each lens, allowing the spectator to see images in 3 d format. This is easily available in Samsung and Mitsubishi brands. The glasses are pretty expensive as they come above 100$.Thus, an insight into the various technologies used in 3d televisions, goes a long way in deciding the right product for the living room.
